Feeling Like A Failure As A Mom
My son attended three day care centers and was asked to leave each of them due to what was considered aggressive behavior. I felt like a failure as a mom. I searched for experts in sensory work and met with an array of specialists and designed a sensory diet for him. At age nine he was released from Special Education Services, those of you that have had experience with that system know how rare that is. This happened because he was able to regulate his emotions and hadn’t had a behavioral incident in two years.
At that time I was writing my dissertation for my Doctorate on Behavior Change. I continued to seek out experts and trainings that could help me understand the brain and the sensory system.
Setting Out On A Journey To Learn About Trauma
In addition to my sons, we had a full house of children, from ages four to eight, all of whom had experienced a significant amount of trauma. I set out on a journey to learn all about trauma. I completed my certification in mindfulness. I also completed my certification in relational frame therapy, and I became certified in Yoga Instruction for Children.
Moved My Focus to Mental Health Support
Soon I moved my focus to mental health support and how to apply different therapeutic models to support individuals. I attended trainings in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and met with lots of experts. I integrated all of these disciplines with every new student.
